ISO 12944-5 - Painting Protective systems

ISO 12944-5 describes type of paints and painting systems commonly used for the protection of steel structures from corrosion. It gives, furthermore, a guideline that helps in selecting the best painting system suitable between different environment exposure (ISO 12944-2) and surface preparations (ISO 12944-1). Painting systems durability is classified as Low, Medium, High and Very High.

The atmospheric environments defined in ISO 12944-2 are considered, except corrosivity category CX. Systems for offshore-CX environments are described in ISO 12944-9.

The immersed environments defined in ISO 12944-2 are considered, except category Im4. Systems for offshore, related structures and Im4 environments are described in ISO 12944-9.

ALL SYSTEMS REPORTED INTO ISO 12944-5 MUST BE INTENDED AS EXAMPLES.
OTHER SYSTEMS WITH SAME PERFORMANCE ARE POSSIBLE.

WATERBORNE SYSTEMS ARE SUITABLE FOR ALMOST ALL ATMOSPHERIC CORROSIVITY CATEGORIES.

Guidelines to the selection of a proper painting system:

- to define environmental corrosivity class (macroclimate) that could belong to an higher corrosivity category
- to establish specific conditions (microclimate) where the structure could be placed
- to check Annex A (ISO 12944-5). Tables from A.2 to a A.5 offer systems composed by general paints details about corrosivity classes from C2 to C5 while table A.1 includes a list of contents of tables from A.2 to A.5
- to identify the proper system with professional care
- to select the best system and notice the surface preparation that will be used
- to advise with the manufacturer about the proper choice of products that compose the selected system about their commercial availability
